What is a rebuttal?
Strictly interpreted, “rebuttal” refers to an attempt to disapprove, contradict, or argue to overcome an opposing reasoning or evidence, by introducing another reasoning and evidence to diminish or destroy the previous one.
What purpose does a rebuttal serve?
A rebuttal in an argument or debate is the presentation of evidence and reasoning meant to weaken or undermine an opponent's claim-commonly your employer. It serves 2 purposes {1} to divulge your side of the story {2} it deters & or prevents your employer from establishing or proceeding with any further actions, which can include disciplinary charges against the employee.
It is very crucial to do a rebuttal as soon as possible once you have been issued a written formal conference, counseling memo, etc. As time is of the essence in the discipilnary process.
-Important information in writing a rebuttal-
{1} write your rebuttal ASAP- employers have 18 months to bring you up on charges
{2} Address what has been alleged against you first
[3] be clear and concise
{4} do your due diligence on the events, or policy and procedures you have been accused of allegedly violating; for your employers are notorious for violating their own promulgated rules and regulations and policy and procedures .
{5} provide tangible facts and or documents supporting your rebuttal.
{6} once you have first addressed their allegations please feel free to always add anything else that benefits you, or your credibility, and that will help diminish or destroy theirs.
[7] hand deliver your written rebuttal to supervisor, email and or fax it to ALL appropriate parties of concern in your agency and request on it- that a copy is to be placed in your personnel folder
